Day trip tip: l'île de Gorée

Salim demonstrates his instrument: beating Kalabas nuts.

'l'île de Gorée', a tiny island in front of Dakar's coast - the most western piece of Africa in the Atlantic.
The name originates from Dutch colonizer, back in the 15th century, who called it 'Goede Reede' - a good harbor.
The French, who colonized it later on, made it sounds French.

Gorée island / l'île de Gorée is most famous for the 'house of slaves'. Mandela, Bush and the pope visited it already.

It is an emotional place, in memory of the estimated 10 million slaves that reached the 'New World' from all of Africa.
But the status of the house itself is being questioned a lot. According to sources like these, the house is a historical hoax,
only to attract tourists.
